  Dr Mark Jacobs

  Dr Jacobs specialises in cataract surgery.  
     
 

Dr Jacobs consults in Drummoyne and performs surgery at the Vision Eye Institute in Chatswood.  His main area of interest is cataract and intraocular lens surgery.

 

After qualifying as an ophthalmic surgeon at Sydney Eye Hospital in 1989, Dr Jacobs worked in London where he was a fellow at the Hospital for Sick Children and Moorfields Eye Hospital.   At present he is a conjoint senior lecturer at the University of New South Wales and a staff specialist at Sydney Children’s Hospital. 

 

Dr Jacobs has a number of publications in peer reviewed international ophthalmology journals.  He is one of a few ophthalmic surgeons in New South Wales to gain the degree of doctorate in medicine (MD- University of New South Wales) for original research of an international standing.  He at present is a co-supervisor of a PHD thesis student.

 
Dr Jacobs has lectured and had papers presented on a variety of ophthalmology topics in Australia and overseas.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (United Kingdom). 
 
 
     
     
 

 

 
 

Dr Simon Chen

  Dr Chen specialises in medical and surgical retina.  
     
 

Dr Simon Chen is an expert in conditions affecting the macula and retina. He is at the forefront of leading edge retinal treatments, offering the latest international advances. These include new treatments for age related macular degeneration, diabetic eye problems, retinal vein occlusions and sutureless retinal surgery.

Dr Chen’s practice at The Eye Institute uses the latest modern technology. He has performed over 3000 eye operations and laser treatments. This experience and his international training, positions him as one of a small number of Australian eye surgeons trained to deal with the full range of routine and complex retinal problems. More importantly, he has the experience to treat, minimise and avoid complications in eye surgery. All treatments are fully customised by Dr Chen to suit the individual needs of his patients.

Dr Chen has been selected to treat many doctors, nurses, optometrists, and their closest relatives who have all trusted his reputation for intricate microsurgery, passion for excellence and ability to communicate well.

Born and raised in the UK, Dr Chen graduated in Medicine from the University of London, and trained in eye surgery at the teaching hospitals of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. He then completed two extra years of advanced Fellowship training in Retinal Surgery at international centres of excellence including the Oxford Eye Hospital, UK and the Lions Eye Institute, Australia.

Prior to joining The Eye Institute, Dr Chen held a public hospital teaching position as Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Retinal surgery in Auckland, regularly receiving referrals for second opinions from doctors throughout New Zealand.

Dr Chen is Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland. He has published over fifty medical articles, conducted research into eye injections for retinal disease and participated in international clinical trials. He reviews research papers for leading medical journals and regularly attends international conferences, providing him with information before it has even been published in the journals. Dr Chen has lectured at international conferences and been interviewed on prime time national television news in New Zealand.

 
     
     
     
 

Dr Angelo Tsirbas

 
 

Dr Tsirbas specialises in general surgery and oculoplastics.

 
     
 

Dr Tsirbas joined Vision Eye Institute in July 2008. Previously he was Assistant Professor in the department Orbital and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery at the Jules Stein Eye Institute in Los Angeles, California. His training is in both general surgery and oculoplastics. Before moving to take the position at UCLA he worked in New York, London, and Australia.

He is involved in several current research projects. These entail both basic science and clinical applications of various emerging technologies.

Some of these include the following:

* Applications for endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy;
* Treatment of TAO with Rituxan and Anakinra and other novel antibody fragment interventions;
* Genetic markers for Ocular and periocular tumours;
* Dermal fillers; roles in periorbital reconstruction and facial rejuvenation; and new surgical approaches to facial rejuvenation.

 

 
     
     
 

 

 
 

Dr Gary Schiller

 
 

Dr Schiller specialises in cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, eyelid disorders and macula degeneration.

 
     
 

Dr Gary Schiller did his general ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital , further glaucoma studies in London and then did a fellowship in oculoplastics at Sydney Eye Hospital in 1989. He then worked on the mid north coast of NSW at Port Macquarie, Taree and Forster with a very large cataract and glaucoma practice.

Dr Schiller has been at Southline for the last eight years specialising in cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, eyelid disorders and macula degeneration. He annually visits China for charity cataract work and teaching the latest cataract techniques.
